Max W. Goodlett, 89, an Arlington resident since 1945, died of a stroke Nov. 11 at Arlington Hospital. Mr. Goodlett was born in 1908. He attended Staunton Military Academy in Staunton, Va., from 1922 to 1928 and was for a time the academy's oldest living alumnus. For 27 years, Mr. Goodlett was a railroad conductor for the Pullman sleeper car line until the Pullman Co. went out of business in 1965. Mr. Goodlett then went to work for Arlington Trust Bank from 1966 to 1973. Mr. Goodlett was preceded in death by his oldest son, John Webb Goodlett, who was lost in 1961 on the sailing ship Albatross, a tragic event recently depicted in the Walt Disney Co. movie "White Squall." Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Orville "Smitty" Goodlett of Arlington; and his son, Warren W. Goodlett of Fairfax.
