Aquila

Altair within Aquila

Altair is the brightest star in the constellation Aquila, the Eagle. It is a 1.3 magnitude pale-yellow star. Finding the outline of an eagle in the vicinity of Altair requires some imagination, as is the case for many other constellations. It is much easier to see Altair as the southernmost star of the asterism, The Sumer Triangle, a prominent grouping of three stars, Deneb, Vega, and Altair, in a right-angle triangle, visible overhead in the summer months.

Science-fiction movie buffs will recall that The Forbidden Planet (first appearance of Robbie the robot, and the film inspiring Gene Roddenberry to create Star Trek ) orbited Altair.
