North American Nebula in Cygnus

NGC 7000 - North American Nebula

Cygnus is home to many cataloged objects, two of which (NGC 6871 and NGC 7092/M39) are rather average, loose open star clusters. The most dramatic of these, M39/NGC7092, lies 800 light-years distant and contains 30 stars in a group seven light years across. The third object, shown above in color and a more detailed black & white image, is the 1,600 light-years distant NGC 7000, named the North American Nebula because of the similarity of its shape to the continent.
