| Monitor brightness right? Adjust brightness down so that the black square on the far right of the scale at left just appears dark and dense and not at all washed out--a true black. The gray next to it should then appear a darker gray, and the next gray square lighter (somewhere between the two is the same as a Kodak gray card), and so on until the square on the far left, which should be the only one appearing true, bright white. Adjust contrast through the range until any flare or blooming is just negated or until screen has proper punch. Eliminate screen glare sources. Pictures should now appear rich and fully saturated. |

Final prints can be created in color, black & white, or as the image above, a representation of traditional, hand-painted black-and-white photography. The color negative is scanned into a computer and its color balance, brightness and other needed enhancements are completed. Then, the color saturation of key features, such as the model's lips and opal pendant, is increased, followed by a reduction of the total image color to a very pale, pastel watercolor. Finally, the image is filled with a selected color (in this photograph, a mauve-type pink instead of the usual sepia) at a level of saturation just below the true colors, approaching a monotone. The lovely model's natural colors are then rendered so subtly that they are felt more than they are seen. The image may then be printed or prepared for the Internet.
